Probably this was the reason why the schools of the art form or\u00a0<em>kalaris\u00a0<\/em>admitted only boys even from the time Kathakali was shaped out of dance dramas such as\u00a0<em>Ramanattam<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Krishnanattam<\/em>\u00a0during the bhakti era. Even in 1927, when the famed Kerala Kalamandalam was formed as an exclusive school to nurture classical and folk art forms of Kerala, admission to the Kathakali course was restricted to boys.<\/p>\n\n<p>Kalamandalam is now a deemed university and an acclaimed centre for performing art with world-class patronage. The decision, long overdue, was after consideration of public feedback and the demands of the times.<\/p>\n\n<p>Kathakali performances are marked for their martial precision and incorporate a lot of\u00a0<em>kalari<\/em>\u00a0movements. This aside, one of the main aspects of training is the\u00a0<em>chavitty uzhichil<\/em>\u00a0where\u00a0the body of performers are massaged by\u00a0the tutors\u00a0with their feet. This\u00a0is to\u00a0tone the body and improve the flexibility and strength of the muscles.\u00a0\u201cThe tough training regime was a reason why women were not\u00a0taught the art form,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Kalamandalam Thulasi,\u00a0a Kathakali faculty.<\/p>\n\n<p>Despite\u00a0such restrictions, women participated\u00a0in Kathakali\u00a0performances after mastering accompanying arts such as vocals or the percussion instruments. There were some who even learnt the art\u00a0in its entirety. Among the first women to learn Kathakali were\u00a0Katyayani from Tripunithura\u00a0and\u00a0Chavara Parukutty.\u00a0There were many cultural differences too that prevented women from taking up the study of the art form.\u00a0Undeterred by these restrictions, Chavara Parukutty continued performing on stage and even excelled as one of the leading\u00a0performers of\u00a0the genre.<\/p>\n\n<p>Marry John,\u00a0the\u00a0country\u2019s\u00a0first female Kathakali make-up artiste,\u00a0recalls her days:\u00a0\u201cIt was a struggle for me. My family was\u00a0also against me with their conservative thought that\u00a0Kathakali\u00a0as an art form is\u00a0evil.\u00a0Luckily, my\u00a0husband Kalamandalam John\u00a0was a\u00a0veteran\u00a0who now lives in Italy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" class=\"wp-image-18351\" src=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/photo1661620035.jpeg\" alt=\"Kalamandalam\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/photo1661620035.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/photo1661620035-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/photo1661620035-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/photo1661620035-150x113.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/photo1661620035-450x338.jpeg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\n<figcaption>Kalamandalam John in a Kathakali training session in a school in Italy.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n\n<p>During the period between 1970s and 1990s,\u00a0more\u00a0women\u00a0started\u00a0taking up Kathakali.\u00a0Some\u00a0from abroad\u00a0took short-term lessons at Kalamandalam\u00a0and many\u00a0learnt\u00a0under individual masters or in private\u00a0institutions.<\/p>\n\n<p>The argument that Kathakali was out of reach for women also has a counter with Kalamandalam Thulasi stating,\u00a0\u201cthis is misinformation. From time immemorial, women have been allowed to perform alongside men in Kathakali. Women still\u00a0do,\u00a0just that their\u00a0number is low\u201d.\u00a0Eminent Kathakali artiste\u00a0Thankamani Kutty\u00a0supports his view, saying \u201cthere was no such discrimination I have had to face\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p>The increasing number of\u00a0women\u00a0in the art\u00a0probably was incidental in convincing the\u00a0Kalamandalam\u00a0authorities\u00a0to throw open the\u00a0doors of\u00a0the\u00a0Kathakali\u00a0school\u00a0to women.\u00a0Connoisseurs of the art\u00a0form\u00a0welcome this move\u00a0as a milestone. \u201cThe\u00a0new\u00a0decision\u00a0was made\u00a0after understanding the need\u00a0to bring gender equality in all fields,\u201d Kalamandalam Thulasi added.<\/p>\n\n<p>To gain admission into\u00a0Kalamandalam,\u00a0there\u00a0are\u00a0no barriers such as\u00a0family background or class preference.\u00a0The intake starts from Class 8,\u00a0and will be done through an\u00a0aptitude test. \u201cAnyone with good health\u00a0and passion\u00a0can participate. But Kalamandalam\u2019s initiative of introducing professional Kathakali training to girls offers\u00a0an opportunity\u00a0for better teaching and patronage. Mentoring\u00a0by in-house instructors\u00a0could soon be a\u00a0norm\u00a0in Kathakali training akin to the training in other classical dance forms. This will\u00a0help bring about diversity in teaching\u00a0and the faculty,\u00a0and thus\u00a0give room for\u00a0improvisations and outreach.\u00a0The challenge for both men and women who practise the art form, according to veteran performer and teacher Vijayan, would be to keep the core values intact without\u00a0them\u00a0being sullied by the march and demands of
