It originally began as a simple PDF newsletter and has since evolved into a global cloud-based platform that enables aspiring journalists to collaborate in real-time, regardless of location. It is a movement<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">, rather than just a newsroom, that empowers students, elevates\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/cinema-revolution-vimpaired-can-now-watch-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>underrepresented voices<\/em><\/a>, and demonstrates that ODL can foster innovative and<\/span>\u00a0inclusive journalism.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Voices<\/em><\/strong>, a student-driven digital news portal. It began with a simple goal of providing students with a space to practice journalism beyond the constraints of an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) framework. It emerged primarily to address the dearth of exposure to a newsroom for distance learners. Traditional ODL models frequently lack the practice, experimentation and teamwork that journalism demands.<\/p>\n<h2>Let&#8217;s Break the Silence<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>The Voices<\/strong> <\/em>aim was to imitate a professional editorial environment where students could apply their theoretical knowledge while strengthening their writing, editing, critical thinking and digital production skills.\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Providing a platform for voiceless and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/a-hard-earned-shimmer-moradabad-brass-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>marginalised communities<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/a-hard-earned-shimmer-moradabad-brass-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<\/a>to express themselves was another objective, in line<\/span>\u00a0with its tagline, &#8220;Let&#8217;s Break the Silence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_36653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36653\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36653\" src=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/thevoicesvol12020-234x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/thevoicesvol12020-234x300.png 234w, https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/thevoicesvol12020-799x1024.png 799w, https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/thevoicesvol12020-768x984.png 768w, https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/thevoicesvol12020-150x192.png 150w, https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/thevoicesvol12020-450x577.png 450w, https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/thevoicesvol12020.png 1016w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The first edition of The Voices [October, 2020]<\/figcaption><\/figure>The idea was initiated in mid-January 2020 for the July 2020 batch, where student reporters wrote stories, and it was subsequently launched as a PDF version. A full-fledged website was launched on 30 March 2021. Initially, some experienced working professionals from various backgrounds headed as mentors handling 4 zones of India- North, East, West, South as per students from various zones. <span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">After this, by 2024, zone segregation was dismantled<\/span><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">, and all students were grouped together in one team,\u00a0<\/span><em><strong>The Voices<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">E-team, where they discussed<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0their stories at every Sunday meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>CMS doubles up as cloud cloud-based newsroom<\/h2>\n<p>The project has demonstrated how ODL students can collaborate in real-time, despite geographical distance. By employing a content management system (CMS), students assume roles similar to those of professional newsroom staff. <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">For example,\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">a student reporter in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/karisal-shines-light-on-importance-of-regional-literary-festivals-in-indias-diverse-landscape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Chennai<\/em><\/a>\u00a0might cover the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/engineering-marvel-of-indian-railways-the-iconic-pamban-bridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pamban Bridge<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in Kanyakumari, upload the report to the CMS, where it is copyedited by a student in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/uncovering-kolkatas-pre-colonial-past-the-bustling-metropolis-before-job-charnock-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Kolkata<\/em><\/a>, reviewed in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/silence-and-sirens-indias-enduring-spirit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Punjab,<\/em><\/a><\/span>\u00a0and finally published from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/delhi-gig-workers-welcome-2025-budgetary-provisions-demand-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Delhi<\/em><\/a>.<\/span> This model simulates the operations of contemporary, distributed digital newsrooms, responding to the needs of distance learners.<\/p>\n<p>Cross-border cooperation is the foundation of <em><strong>The Voices<\/strong><\/em>&#8216; operations. As digital creators, editors, reporters, and reviewers, students are assigned responsibilities. The CMS uses a methodical process for submitting, editing, reviewing, and pitching stories. The platform encourages users to experiment with different formats, including news reports, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/empowered-women-safer-workplaces-posh-act-2013-explainer\/\">infographics<\/a><\/em>, podcasts, and <a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/the-hidden-talents-of-thatheras-brass-and-copper-utensil-markers-in-amritsar-photo-feature\/\"><em>photo essays<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Notably, despite crises such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/benevolence-bump-sustained-since-covid-19-the-world-happiness-report-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>COVID-19 pandemic<\/em><\/a>, students were able to maintain<\/span>\u00a0continuity and resilience by continuing to report, edit, and publish from various locations.<\/p>\n<h2>Unique student-led newsroom<\/h2>\n<p>Student-led newsrooms have been tested by journalism schools worldwide, including Columbia University and the University of Melbourne. Similar opportunities have been offered in India through university-led magazines and platforms such as Youth Ki Awaaz. <em><strong>The Voices<\/strong> <\/em>is a groundbreaking example of cloud-based, collaborative journalism in India, although it is the only one to incorporate professional newsroom procedures directly\u00a0into an ODL framework.<\/p>\n<p><em style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>The Voices<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> platform encompasses a range of themes and sectors.<\/span>\u00a0They are social issues, health, environment, governance, urban infrastructure and culture. Some examples\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">include stories about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/unpaid-employees-hence-unclean-delhi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delhi garbage strike<\/a>, mandatory rural postings for doctors, and explanations<\/span>\u00a0about <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/petrofiction-literature-that-gives-voice-to-the-marginalized-impacted-by-oil\/\">oil<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Students have also contributed stories on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/an-ode-to-mahatma-aga-khan-palace-the-prison-for-mahatma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>architecture<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/fresh-leadership-old-question-will-bhalswa-ever-breathe-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>the environment,<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/vividhta-ka-amrit-mahotsav\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>multilingual<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>cultural experiences<\/span>. It features profiles that are frequently overlooked by the media, such as young organisations leading <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/madagascar-famine-climatechange-globalwarming\/\">climate<\/a> <\/em>campaigns, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/female-body-in-fitness-and-sports-phogat-and-the-likes-of-weightloss\/\">women <\/a><\/em>craftspeople reviving endangered <a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/kantha-embroidery-the-quilted-art-of-threads\/\"><em>crafts<\/em><\/a> or <em><a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/portraits-of-migrant-laborers-in-kerala\/\">migrant<\/a><\/em><br \/>\nworkers surviving. The working class receives the credit it deserves, <a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/immersive-journalism-the-transmission-from-watching-to-experiencing\/\"><em>technology<\/em> <\/a>is evaluated based on its social effects, and health is continuously observed. Overall, the voices of the common people find an echo across our news efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to diversify into multimedia formats<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">, including data-driven journalism, video\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/empowered-women-safer-workplaces-posh-act-2013-explainer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>explainers,<\/em><\/a><\/span><em>\u00a0<\/em>and podcasts. More international cooperation and multilingual editions are also planned. The long-term goal is to\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">establish\u00a0<em><strong>The Voices as<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>a credible and inclusive platform that shapes public narratives, while also serving as a learning laboratory<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, <em><strong>The Voices<\/strong> has\u00a0<\/em>established itself to be more than just a student newspaper. It is an open forum for truth, a training ground for digital <a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/simmering-chandrapurs-battle-against-brutal-summer\/\"><em>storytelling<\/em> <\/a>and an experiment in collaborative learning.
