It provided a platform for dialogue on climate, discussion of potential solutions, and an action-focused plan by mobilising climate-focused organisations and movements.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">As per\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">the Maharashtra\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">GHG<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0(Greenhouse Gas)\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medialit.in\/thevoices\/simmering-chandrapurs-battle-against-brutal-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Emission Profile<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0conducted by the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability and Technology, the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">state<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0is the\u00a0<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">largest subnational economy<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">, with a size of $480 billion, and <\/span><strong>accounts for 10 per cent of India\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>. Keeping this in view, holding climate talks at such a place holds more significance than ever.<\/span><\/div>\n<h2><strong>The Thought Behind Mumbai Climate Week<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div><strong>Mumbai<\/strong>, a coastal city, is already <strong>experiencing floods, drainage issues, transportation disruptions<\/strong> and <strong>livelihood challenges<\/strong>. Mumbai Climate Week (MCW) was a way to democratize climate conversation, which has largely remained a closed-door conversation of the elite.<\/div>\n<div>The three-day event urged stakeholders to move beyond blueprints to real-time implementation, which requires accountability. <span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The MCW\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">served as a catalyst for\u00a0<\/span><strong>&#8220;We The People&#8221;<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0to come forward and be part of larger goals, such as\u00a0<\/span><strong>managing waste, protecting Mangroves, addressing urban flooding and waterlogging<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0due to\u00a0<\/span><strong>heavy rainfall,<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong>addressing <\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">rising sea levels.<\/strong><\/div>\n<h2>Maha Govt, UNEP To Beat The Heat<\/h2>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The event saw the launch of over 1000 urban climate action projects in the pipeline to foster inclusive, sustainable and\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">climate-resilient cities across Maharashtra<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The Maharashtra government signed an MoU with the UN Environment Programme to uplift the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Majhi Vasundhara<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> (My World) initiative to address the ever-increasing heat stress in its cities.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><strong>Maharashtra<\/strong> is one of the five states of India which is most <strong>vulnerable to the effects of climate change<\/strong>. According to UNEP, the state has experienced<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"> 142 extreme weather events in 2024. Over 94 per cent of the state&#8217;s districts are vulnerable to climate change. The number of hot days and extreme heat days has increased over the past five decades, incidents of droughts have tripled, and floods have increased by four times. Talking to The Voices, Skipli said that as of today, Many Frocks has upcycled 3 lakh yards of fabric. The Model adopted for the event is the \u201c<\/span><b>Hub and Spoke Model.\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hub is Jio Convention Centre, and Spoke is happening around, like at TISS, Trident, IIT Bombay, or places where <strong>communities<\/strong> are getting involved during this event, <strong>participating in climate-led dialogue.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>\u201cClimate is about partnership, and Mumbai Climate Week is about building partnerships.\u201d <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>&#8211; Abhijit Ghorpade<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The event is a start to a much-needed conversation because generally, climate conversations are confined in five star ambience and tend to be elitist. But Mumbai Climate Week has opened doors to community involvement and raised awareness among people,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He told <em><strong>The Voices<\/strong><\/em> that, in the context of changes that can be applied on the ground to reduce carbon emissions, <strong>Mumbai is the first city in South Asia<\/strong> to release a city climate action plan in 2022. It has formulated its city climate action cells and full fledged department for planning and implementation.
