Climate-related disasters have left India and the world baffled in recent years.\u00a0<\/span>While\u00a0<\/span>individuals feel their actions have a lesser significant impact in bringing about positive change, the\u00a0<\/span>Mumbai Climate Week (MCW)<\/strong>\u00a0held in February 2026 took a closer look at issues like this to drive\u00a0<\/span>change<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and foster a\u00a0<\/span>unified<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0dialogue.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Mumbai Climate Week (MCW) was India\u2019s first event dedicated to accelerating climate action, empowering Mumbai, India and the Global South. It provided a platform for dialogue on climate, discussion of potential solutions, and an action-focused plan by mobilising climate-focused organisations and movements.<\/span><\/p>\n

As per\u00a0<\/span>the Maharashtra\u00a0<\/span>GHG<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(Greenhouse Gas)\u00a0<\/span>Emission Profile<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0conducted by the International Forum for Environment, Sustainability and Technology, the\u00a0<\/span>state<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is the\u00a0<\/span>largest subnational economy<\/span><\/strong>, with a size of $480 billion, and <\/span>accounts for 10 per cent of India\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong>. Keeping this in view, holding climate talks at such a place holds more significance than ever.<\/span><\/div>\n

The Thought Behind Mumbai Climate Week<\/strong><\/h2>\n
Mumbai<\/strong>, a coastal city, is already experiencing floods, drainage issues, transportation disruptions<\/strong> and livelihood challenges<\/strong>. Mumbai Climate Week (MCW) was a way to democratize climate conversation, which has largely remained a closed-door conversation of the elite.<\/div>\n
The three-day event urged stakeholders to move beyond blueprints to real-time implementation, which requires accountability. The MCW\u00a0<\/span>served as a catalyst for\u00a0<\/span>“We The People”<\/strong>\u00a0to come forward and be part of larger goals, such as\u00a0<\/span>managing waste, protecting Mangroves, addressing urban flooding and waterlogging<\/strong>\u00a0due to\u00a0<\/span>heavy rainfall,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>addressing <\/strong>rising sea levels.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Maha Govt, UNEP To Beat The Heat<\/h2>\n
The event saw the launch of over 1000 urban climate action projects in the pipeline to foster inclusive, sustainable and\u00a0<\/span>climate-resilient cities across Maharashtra<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0The Maharashtra government signed an MoU with the UN Environment Programme to uplift the\u00a0<\/span>Majhi Vasundhara<\/strong> (My World) initiative to address the ever-increasing heat stress in its cities.<\/span><\/div>\n
Maharashtra<\/strong> is one of the five states of India which is most vulnerable to the effects of climate change<\/strong>. According to UNEP, the state has experienced<\/span> 142 extreme weather events in 2024. Over 94 per cent of the state’s districts are vulnerable to climate change. The number of hot days and extreme heat days has increased over the past five decades, incidents of droughts have tripled, and floods have increased by four times. The frequency of cyclones in the country’s coastal areas has also tripled over the past 10 years.<\/span><\/div>\n
In the backdrop of this, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) signed a memorandum of cooperation on “Urban Heat Mitigation, Nature-based Resilience System, Climate Adaptation Framework with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Urban Land Institute (ULI) and World Resources Institute (WRI), a step towards climate protection.<\/div>\n

At the inauguration, Maharashtra<\/strong> CM Devendra Fadnavis <\/strong>highlighted the reason Mumbai Climate Week is necessary. He stated that climate change is a real governance challenge, causing floods, disrupting transport, affecting livelihood<\/a><\/strong> and bringing severe hardships for farmers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal of the event was to bring climate dialogue that often happens in the developed world to the global south, and provide a platform to diverse voices across India and other developing countries,” said Shishir Joshi, <\/strong>CEO and founder of Project Mumbazi<\/strong>. Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma<\/strong>, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla <\/strong>and Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar<\/strong> joined to advocate urgent environmental action.<\/p>\n

Theme of Mumbai Climate Week<\/b><\/h2>\n

“Tomorrow’s cities” – a session by Prof. Mark Pelling, Professor of Risk and Disaster Reduction at University College London<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
The theme<\/strong> for this year’s event was ‘Where Hope Meets Action’<\/strong>, with the purpose of transitioning from climate dialogue to practical implementation. Attention was given to three core areas:\u00a0 <\/span>Urban Theme, Food System Theme and Energy Transition Theme. <\/b><\/div>\n
Building livable cities, healthy air zones for local communities, cooling cities naturally, leveraging Blue-Green Infrastructure for urban heat resilience, extreme heat and the future of outdoor work, and regional \u2013airshed-based governance mechanisms for clean air and innovative solutions for livable urban futures were major topics of discussion under the <\/span>Urban Theme<\/b>.<\/span><\/div>\n

Food system theme<\/b> saw methodological discussions on nature, food & people, building better market ecosystems: <\/strong><\/span>Producer se Consumer Tak<\/i><\/strong>, financing the food systems transformation in the Global South, technology and services economy for a climate-smart food transformation<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Energy transition theme<\/b> focused on UNEP x MMRDA: Beat the Heat- scaling sustainable cooling \u2013 Insights from BeCool, DRE for Development: Scalable Models from India for the Global South, transport transition, scaling the green energy transition<\/span><\/p>\n

The Exhibition Arena: Determination Towards Change<\/b><\/h2>\n

The exhibition featured a one-of-a-kind booth by Many Frocks<\/b>, founded by Shilpi Datta Som<\/strong>, showcasing handcrafted children\u2019s apparel made from upcycled textile waste sourced from factories and export houses. Talking to The Voices, Skipli said that as of today, Many Frocks has upcycled 3 lakh yards of fabric. Certified by Arantree Consulting Services Private Limited, the process reduces carbon emissions by 45%<\/strong> as compared to conventional methods.<\/p>\n

Other\u00a0<\/span>exhibitors\u00a0<\/strong>include<\/span>\u00a0Spectrum Impact, a\u00a0<\/strong>Mumbai-based impact organisation that developed an immersive heat-burden experience chamber, where visitors experienced 40\u00b0C conditions to understand the physical strain of extreme heat.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>CRASTE\u00a0<\/b>produces green building materials and eco-friendly paper and packaging using patented green manufacturing technology and\u00a0100% crop residue collected from local farms. <\/span>Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS)<\/b>, Mumbai,\u00a0<\/span>focused on a key initiative,\u00a0“Share \u0915\u0930\u093e, Care \u0915\u0930\u093e”<\/strong> (Share Kara, Care Kara), advocating\u00a0shared auto-rickshaw usage to reduce carbon emissions. Tisser <\/b>(specifically Tisser Artisan Trust \/ Tisser India), based in Mumbai, showcased its Navi Mumbai textile recycling\/upcycling project.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abhijit Ghorpade, <\/span>current Director of the State Climate Action Cell<\/b> under the Environment and Climate Change department, Government of Maharashtra, shared his insights with\u00a0The Voices<\/em>, <\/strong><\/span>“Mumbai Climate Week will be an annual event. The Model adopted for the event is the \u201c<\/span>Hub and Spoke Model.\u201d <\/b>Hub is Jio Convention Centre, and Spoke is happening around, like at TISS, Trident, IIT Bombay, or places where communities<\/strong> are getting involved during this event, participating in climate-led dialogue.”\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClimate is about partnership, and Mumbai Climate Week is about building partnerships.\u201d <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

– Abhijit Ghorpade<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

“The event is a start to a much-needed conversation because generally, climate conversations are confined in five star ambience and tend to be elitist. But Mumbai Climate Week has opened doors to community involvement and raised awareness among people,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

He told The Voices<\/strong><\/em> that, in the context of changes that can be applied on the ground to reduce carbon emissions, Mumbai is the first city in South Asia<\/strong> to release a city climate action plan in 2022. It has formulated its city climate action cells and full fledged department for planning and implementation. Key challenges are urban heating\/flooding, heat waves, air pollution and vehicular emissions. <\/span><\/p>\n

Certain measures implemented\u00a0include\u00a0Best Buses<\/strong>\u00a0that were\u00a0converted to electric power<\/strong>. <\/span>“Around 5000 state transport vehicles will also be turning electric<\/strong>. <\/span>The government is emphasising <\/span>the penetration of electric vehicles<\/b>, with more charging stations being built near petrol pumps, malls, and cooperative housing societies. With respect to urbanisation, the building sector needs reforms such as rooftop polarisation and improved energy efficiency, for which 18 high-impact action plans are expected. The government is well focused on bottlenecks like lack of awareness among the masses regarding climate, use of sustainable building material, regulatory challenges, designing of sustainable buildings and is working towards it,” revealed Ghorpade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Awards at The <\/b>Mumbai Climate Week 2026<\/b><\/p>\n

\n

Bela Gram <\/b>emerged as Maharashtra\u2019s first net-zero village<\/strong> through Sharada Gayadhane\u2019s panchayat leadership. The Panchayat took a leadership role in implementing renewable energy<\/strong> (solar panels and biogas plants), promoting energy efficiency, managing waste responsibly, and enhancing green cover through tree planting. By integrating these actions into local development planning,\u00a0Bela Gram achieved carbon neutrality<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pahchan Foundation\u00a0<\/strong>was recognised with the EarthON Climate Champion Award for work in<\/span>\u00a0waste management, sustainability,<\/strong> and community\u2011driven environmental action.<\/span> It\u2019s transformative, community-rooted climate action by young changemakers in Titagarh, West Bengal, was highlighted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Panaji <\/b>was awarded was honoured for its climate\u2011aligned urban governance<\/strong> and sustainable practices that directly contribute to climate resilience and lower emissions. The city shows how integrated waste & resource management, citizen\u2011centred behaviour change, a replicable urban model, and linking cleanliness to climate action can drive change.<\/p>\n

This event will be held every year, along with a small, related event held throughout the year. Mumbai Climate Week 2026 was a beginning where ideas were shared, action was shaped, and a collective journey began.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
