Jammu: <\/span><\/span>Closure<\/span><\/span> of educational facilities triggered by subseq<\/span><\/span>uent lockdo<\/span><\/span>wns have pushed schools to shift from traditional classroom system to digital mode of learn<\/span><\/span>\"\"<\/span>ing im<\/span><\/span>pacting ove<\/span><\/span>r 240 million<\/span><\/span>\u00a0chi<\/span><\/span>ldren in the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> country. Th<\/span><\/span>e task to confront the crisis gets even more challenging in areas of complicated social, political dynamics such as Jammu and Kashmir. In order to find out how the Union Territory handled the challenge posed by the pandemic,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The Voices tracks the measures taken by<\/span><\/span>\u00a0t<\/span><\/span>he Directorate of School Education, Jammu (DSEJ).\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\nAbrogation of Article 370 and 35A was not merely about an emergence of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It was also about temporary closure of school facilities and internet restrictions placed in for transition and security purposes. Schools did open in March 2020 but only to be closed couple of weeks later due<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to the surge in COVID-19 cases. In times when Digital emerged as the new normal, these virtual classrooms became an area of concern for students residing in re<\/span><\/span>mote areas. Thus, bridging the digital divide was a mammoth challenge before the administration.<\/span><\/span>\n

\u00a0<\/span>In an attempt to acknowledge Internet issues and bridge the learning voids, DESJ distributed hard copies of books among the students of Classes 1 to 8 in the union territory at an outlay of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Rs. 1105.44 lakh<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Organising Community Classes at village levels was another attempt by DSEJ to bridge the digital divide in learning. Classes were conducted in open spaces with strict adherence to COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures to achieve twin objectives of safety and education at one go<\/span><\/span>. DSEJ says they have been aiming a 100% attendance in the region.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Apart from various interventions to compliment digital teaching infrastructure, DSEJ also uploaded a range of digital content on platforms such as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>YouTube<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It wasn\u2019t just academics which was at the core of recalibration anchored by DSEJ. These unprecedented times have brought drastic changes in mental health, owing to stress, a<\/span><\/span>nxiety, suicidal tendencies in student communities. To deal with it, the education department<\/span>\u00a0launched\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2018<\/span><\/span>Manodarpan<\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>\u00a0initiative with the aim to provide psycho-social support and counselling to students for mental health and well-being. In harmony with the same, DSEJ constituted a psychological task force of more than 130 faculty members to strengthen the counselling set up in Jammu region.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The department has also nominated around 30 District Council Coordinator (DCC) and Zonal Counselling Coordinators (ZCC) to coordinate counselling activities in ten districts of Jammu region. All the DCCs and ZCCs are experts in Psychology and hence they play a crucial role in awareness and information\u00a0<\/span>dissemination.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A tele-counselling helpline\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Aao<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Baat\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Karein<\/span><\/span>\u00a0managed by 15-20 counsellors too, is being operated in 2 hour shifts from 10 AM to 8 PM. The facility has responded to almost 4000 calls during last three months and has addressed a range of academic cum\u00a0<\/span><\/span>counselling<\/span><\/span>\u00a0concerns of student, parent and teaching community.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Apart from conventional academics, DSEJ focused on co-curricular activities too. Khushi a student from Jammu, who wo<\/span><\/span>\"\"<\/span><\/span>n National Level Competition \u2018Kala Utsav\u2019 in Solo Music – Vocal Category tells The Voices \u201cMy talent came out through the support of my teachers and School Education Department. Such initiatives coupled with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>parents<\/span><\/span>\u00a0motivation inspire girls to come forward and showcase their talent.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Launch of counselling calendar, constructive home assignments, organisation of webinars on well-being themes etc. has helped almost 14,000 students in Jammu region to breach the challenge of the times and excel. Recently\u00a0<\/span><\/span>DSEJ launched \u2018Well-being House\u2019 under the Student House System in all the Govt. Schools of Jammu Division.\u00a0 Speaking during the launch Dr. Ravi Shankar Sharma, Director, DSEJ said\u00a0\u201cMental and physical well-being is the key to a happier, more productive sociable student. \u00a0<\/span><\/span>Well-being House will provide psycho-social support to the students and teachers and sensitize them about child protection issues, health, hygiene and fitness\u00a0<\/span><\/span>issues.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Three houses namely Eco, Wisdom and Peace were already in place. Together they aim at achieving sustainable development of the children, which is the ultimate aim of any education model.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
