Apart from the results of the 5 assembly elections, Election Commission of India (ECI) also announced the results of the recently held bye-elections for 13 legislative assembly seats and 4 Lok Sabha seats across 12 states.
The results presented quite a mixed bag with the BJP winning one Lok sabha and five assembly seats while the Congress was able to retain one Lok Sabha seat and came on top in four legislative assembly constituencies. The outcome of the other two Lok Sabha seats and the remaining four legislative assembly seats was in favour of regional parties.
Bye-elections to the four Parliamentary constituencies (PC’s) were held on April 6 and April 17, 2021. While Malappuram (Kerala) and Kanniyakumari (Tamil Nadu) voted on April 6, 2021, Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh) and Belgaum (Karnataka) voted on April 17, 2021.
V Vijaya Kumar alias Vijay Vasanth of the Indian National Congress, won the Kanniyakumari Parliamentary constituency (PC) with a margin of 137950 votes by defeating his nearest Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) rival Radhakrishnan P. The seat had fallen vacant after the death of his father, Congress M.P H. Vasanthakumar due to COVID-19.
YSR Congress’s Maddila Gurumoorthy won Tirupati PC in Andhra Pradesh by a margin of 271592 votes. The bypoll was necessitated following the death of YSRC MP B Durgaprasad.
Bypoll at Belgaum (Belagavi) Lok Sabha constituency went down to the wire until BJP candidate Mangala Suresh Angadi emerged victorious by a thin margin of 5,240 votes against Congress candidate Satish Jarkiholi.
Indian Union Muslim League’s Abdussamad Samadani was declared the winner in Malappuram PC. The bye-election in Malappuram was necessitated when IUML national general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty resigned from the Lok Sabha to contest to the Assembly. He defeated his nearest rival V.P. Sanu, from Communist Party of India (Marxist) by a margin of 114615.
Election Commission also announced the results for the by-polls to the 13 other Assembly constituencies of Basavakalyan and Maski in Karnataka, Morva Hadaf in Gujarat, Madhupur in Jharkhand, Damoh in Madhya Pradesh, Pandharput in Maharashtra, Sahara, Rajsamand, Sujangarh in Rajasthan, Nagarjuna Sagar in Telangana, Salt in Uttarakhand, Serchhip in Mizoram, Noksem in Nagaland.
